I recently learned there is an outside light bulb that supports the “dark skies” initiative in Deschutes County. An Eagle Crest resident noticed some homes on their street have older exterior lighting in which you can see the light bulb from a bit of a distance off property. As part of the Deschutes County ordinance, if you are to walk outside the property line and the light bulb is visible, it should be replaced (see Deschutes County FAQ).
Anyhow, conversations were had, online investigations were completed, and a solution was resolved with the purchase of some new exterior lightbulbs that shine “down”. No need to replace the exterior lighting fixtures.
Thus, a thank you to some neighbors whom worked out a wonderful solution. I’m sharing this story in case you have exterior lighting that needs to be modified to support the Dark Skies initiative.
Also, if you want to find out more information regarding Dark Skies, Eagle Crest has a Dark Skies committee meeting coming up in September, open to anyone wishing to attend.
